In this Martial Arts Parent; Joshua Ryer, Aeriella, and Gage practice the sitting Back Break Fall and take advantage of the beautiful winter weather.
For each tip we want to provide you with a few technique cues to remember as well as a few teachable, life-skill moments for you to share with your child.
Technique cues...
1. We say and practice the three steps of our Back Break Fall; "Hug Your Knees", "Tuck Your Chin", and "Slap The Snow" (or whatever surface you are on).
2. If your child practices from a standing position we say "Bend Your Knees" instead of "Hugging".
3. Your child should have a rounded, tucked position when falling back rather than what I call a "back flop".
4. You want to make sure the back of your child's head does not touch the ground.
5. You want your child's arms to be on a forty-five degree angle below their shoulder line.
6. They should slap the ground with the palms of their hands rather than the top of their hands.
Teachable life skill moments...
1. Take your martial arts practice outside and enjoy it.
2. Be creative and find ways (like creating snow angels) to integrate martial arts practice into activities children love and will have fun with.
3. Give your child plenty of encouragement and be excited for them!
